You wake up half a sleep, take a shower and somehow you manage to get to your office to start your day. That’s when you pour a warm cup of coffee and it only takes one sip for the day to really starts to move.

Approximately every year 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide! But what is it that makes coffee such a beloved drink that keeps the world going? Here at the Great Harvest in Spokane, we made a quick guide of what  makes this beverage so special.

A Bit About Coffee

It’s believed that the word coffee appeared in arabic under the name of qahwah which means wine. After that it arrived to Turkey like Kahveh and passed to the europeans by the Italian traders when they called it caffe.

It only grows in certain parts of the world in what is known as the ‘bean belt’ which includes certain places in Africa, India, Asia, Mexico and parts of South America. The only place in America where it’s harvested is Hawaii.

Health

Recent studies show that coffee is part of a healthy lifestyle, it has a large quantity of antioxidants and of course it has the stimulant caffeine which helps us to feel more awake. In moderate quantities it can increase attention span, and it lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Coffee is truly a great thing and there is one little thing that makes it even better: Bread. There is nothing like it in the morning and if it’s a healthy whole wheat bread from Great Harvest, is even better.
